I’d made a spontaneous, last-minute trip to Fraserburgh, in the northeast of Scotland, travelling up from one day to the next. Why? Because the night before, there’d been an incredible display of the Northern Lights, and this spot is one of the best in Scotland to catch them.
I arrived with high hopes, but the entire day on Saturday was overcast. I knew as the evening approached that the Aurora wouldn’t appear. It was a disappointment, but sometimes, a landscape gives you a better gift than the one you came for.
As the sun sank, the sky exploded in what became one of the most magnificent sunset displays I have ever witnessed. The clouds that had blocked the stars all day turned into a canvas of deep indigo, soft lavender, and fiery orange. I watched as the light beautifully framed the sturdy, unwavering lighthouse on the pier, a lonely beacon holding its ground against the vast ocean.
I didn’t get the shot I planned, but I walked away with some of my favourite sunset images ever. It was a perfect reminder that sometimes you have to let go of your expectations and simply embrace the beauty that the moment offers.
Bring this epic moment of coastal drama into your space. This print is a powerful focal point for any room, a perfect piece to remind you that even when a plan changes, the world can surprise you with something truly unforgettable.
