I was spending an afternoon on the northern shores of the Isle of Mull when the sky started to turn. A storm began to brew, rolling in over the water with alarming speed. I could see it coming, a dark, heavy mass that was going to be upon me very quickly.
Instinct told me to pack up and get back to the car. I even started heading that way, but something stopped me. The drama of the scene was just too powerful to abandon. I decided to stay, face the incoming weather head-on, and see what I could capture before the wind and rain made it impossible.
Against the odds—with the wind howling and the first drops of rain hitting the lens—I was able to take a series of breathtaking, moody long exposures. The blurred motion of the water and the heavy, textured sky perfectly convey the raw, untamed power of the approaching storm. This photograph is one of my favourites to this day, a reminder that the best shots often come right after you decide to stay and challenge the elements.
Bring this sense of dramatic power into your space. This print is an intense and atmospheric piece of art, perfect for adding a moody, commanding presence to a living room, office, or any space that appreciates the raw beauty of the coastal wilderness.
