There is a moment during a Winter sunset in Edinburgh that feels like pure magic, and this shot captures it. I was set up to capture the city skyline as the light faded, and I watched as the colours in the sky went through a mesmerising transition—from gold to fiery orange, and finally into a deep, cold purple.
It was hard to frame the scene, because the Edinburgh city centre skyline is so densely packed with iconic architecture. Every angle offered a new masterpiece, but I finally settled on this view.
The final result with St Giles’ Cathedral lit up like a beacon was the undeniable winner of the evening. The contrast between the intense, cold blue of the distant hills and the warm, incandescent glow illuminating the foreground buildings creates a truly striking and unforgettable mood.
This photograph is my favourite view of Scotland’s capital: a city of ancient stone bathed in a fleeting, breathtaking light.
